TorcPlug used for Perforate & Test
Deployed together with 3rd party wireless pressure and temperature monitoring enables more efficient pre P&A operations.
Challenge
An Operator in Netherlands had significant P&A Campaign of an onshore gas field and had focus on optimizing Through Tubing Abandonment. Moving more Abandonment scope from rig to rig less has a significant environmental and financial impact.
Perforate & Test is a method to verify annular integrity through pressure testing to confirm well barriers.
The customer wanted to utilize the Bridge Plug with a gauge below to observe for pressure build up real time.
Solution
The solution was the innovative TorcPlug, equipped with a pressure and temperature gauge positioned below, providing real-time data via an acoustic telemetry signal. The operational sequence before deploying the plug was as follows:
- Perforate a bottom interval near the top of the cement and conduct a pressure test on the annular cement.
- Perforate the top interval, typically spaced 30-50 meters apart, depending on regulatory standards or company procedures.
- Install the TorcPlug with the gauge positioned between the perforated intervals.
- Pressure test the tubing and monitor for pressure build-up below the TorcPlug to confirm a reliable barrier.
Value Created
This system was successfully executed on 16 wells, enabling the operator to excel in their Through Tubing Abandonment program. By shifting Plug & Abandonment operations from rig-based to rig-less, the approach is transforming the way wells are plugged, saving both time and cost.
Deploying the TorcPlug with real-time monitoring via wireline drastically reduces operational time by over 50% compared to traditional drilling rigs resulting in substantial cost savings. This efficiency minimizes rig mobilization, setup, and execution time, allowing operators to save several days per well. The benefits extend beyond cost, reducing rental and labor expenses, lowering environmental impact, and accelerating project timelines for a more efficient and sustainable well abandonment process.
Available for tubing sizes from 4 ½” to 9 5/8” casing, this next-generation rig-less well integrity testing system continues to set new standards, reducing time, cost, and risk in Plug & Abandonment projects well into the future.
