TorcPlug provides shallow set barrier in challenging environment
Challenge
A North Sea customer required a temporary barrier for a well they planned to plug and abandon (P&A). The primary challenge was the condition of the 7” tubing, which was heavily corroded and eroded. This posed a significant risk for setting a reliable barrier that could withstand high pressure without compromising the integrity of the degraded tubing.
Solution
TorcPlug was selected due to its ability to meet the stringent ISO 14310 V0 requirements. The plug also needed to meet a minimum pressure rating of 5000 psi, ensuring a robust seal under demanding conditions.
Adjustable Setting Force
The TorcPlug adjustable setting force was crucial in avoiding the risk of bursting the corroded and eroded casing. This feature allowed for precise control during the setting process.
Re-setting Capability
Given the condition of the tubing, the ability to re-set the plug in case of challenges with the setting depth was vital. This flexibility ensured that the plug could be optimally positioned even in less-than-ideal conditions.
Real-time Verification
The TorcDrive Software provided real-time verification of the setting process. This capability ensured that the plug was set correctly and that any issues could be immediately addressed.
Value Created
The TorcPlug was successfully set and tested according to plan, providing a reliable barrier that met the ISO 14310 V0 requirements. This outcome not only reduced the time needed for the operation but also minimized risks associated with setting a barrier in heavily corroded and eroded tubing.
By using the TorcPlug, the customer was able to achieve a secure and dependable temporary barrier, facilitating the safe and efficient plug and abandonment of the well. The success of this operation demonstrated the effectiveness of the TorcPlug in challenging well conditions, offering a reliable solution for mature wells in the future.
